Upasana, located in Auroville, Tamil Nadu in southern India, is a place where creativity, fashion, design, Indian culture, business, social responsibility and spiritual progress get woven seamlessly together. In 1997, Upasana was founded by Uma Haimavati Prajapati to present India through textile crafts, for a multicultural community. In 2004, after the Indian Ocean tsunami, Upasana ventured into the field of social development with a strong focus on ‘design for change’. Since then, many projects were launched to serve various grass-root communities of India. In 2011, Upasana aligned itself to ‘Conscious Fashion’. Now, Upasana has been working extensively with organic cotton, Khadi, natural Indigo dyeing, and medicinal textiles in her clothing and accessories lines, focussing on community centric designs. Upasana implements mindful and ethical practices in production processes, retailing and consumer behaviour in the fashion industry under the concept of ‘Conscious Fashion’. In 2016, Upasana took conscious fashion towards the field of education, by creating The Conscious Fashion Hub - a platform to educate, inspire and support. This project includes educational programmes and various collaborations. We believe that fashion has the power to change the world, give it a chance!
About Small Steps
Small Steps is a green campaign which was launched as a solution to the environmental problem of plastic carry bags. Women from more than 14 villages work to make the ‘Small Steps’ bags. ‘Small Steps’ believes that the solutions to our problems lie in every little step we take every day, altering our small habits to make a bigger change.
