BOLT INNOVATION CHALLEGE

We also plan to continue our engagement with various technical colleges via the Innovation challenge we are organising. In this email, I want to share more about this 'Bolt IoT and ML Innovation Challenge.' As part of this challenge, we take a few selected students from some of the prestigious colleges of India, such as St. Xavier's College, Kolkata and train them on the concepts of IoT and ML. This training is followed by a project competition between them to choose the most innovative students from India.


The competition will be judged by some of the experts who have worked at organisations like Amazon. The competition will be an excellent opportunity for the students to showcase their talent and skills at an all India level.



What are the steps for the Bolt IoT and ML Innovation Challenge?


Step1: Students will have to answer a scholarship test to qualify for participating in the competition. The qualifying students will also get the IoT and ML training for FREE. They only need to purchase the necessary hardware kit required to build the hands-on projects during the training as well as the competition. To answer the scholarship, students have to visit https://info.boltiot.com/iotmlscholarship

Step 2: Our team of developers will train the students on the concepts of IoT and ML via online video training.

Step 3: The students have to build an innovative project in the area of IoT or ML by applying the learnings during the training.

Step 4: The winners will be judged by engineers who have worked at prestigious organisations like Amazon.

  • To avail the scholarship, the students have to answer a scholarship test and qualify for the same by scoring at-least 70% marks.
  • This is a short test and will not take more than 10 minutes of the students. This ensures that they can answer it without spending much time if they have exams ongoing.

UPSTREAM INNOVATION

Internship


The company’s name is ‘Upstream Innovations’ (UPI). It is a start-up based out of Singapore and India that provides a foundational cloud-based, mobile-enabled platform for developing, delivering and optimizing digital experiences across diverse business domains. UPI is well-funded and looking to launch its first propriety product ‘EduHans’ in 2020. EduHans is a one-stop unified platform that offers a bundle of AI-enabled education-focused, self-managed services/tools related to profiling, searching, counseling,  communicating and social networking for both Education seekers &
providers.

Job location
Flexible. Phase I or the initial period of the internship will mostly require working remotely with a laptop, secure internet, and mobile phone connection. Phase II or the latter part of the internship may require travel to cities within India, Singapore or S.E. Asia depending upon business needs.

The internship has been structured in two phases of the 3-month period with focussed planned deliverables. The intern is expected to put in a minimum of 40 hrs per week.

Job descriptions
This is a commercialization project that will focus on defining the market entry strategy and
identifying specific tactics to win target customers for the EduHans platform. The project goal is achieved through the following deliverables –

Phase I
1. Define the target customer segment and clearly identify potential ‘early adopters’ of EduHans
• Secondary market research to shortlist and prioritize top countries, states, cities and
the specific set of Educators (universities, schools, coaching centers, individual tutors,
government universities etc.) for launching the B2B and B2C portions of EduHans
• The analysis should be based on well-defined logical parameters such as digital
economy penetration for the target country, educator/student behavior and
readiness, educator need, competitive environment, legal/regulatory restrictions,
product fit etc.

2. Develop deep customer understanding
• Primary market research (mostly telephonic, few local personal visits) to clearly
identify the current digitization status of target Educator (end-to-end flow from
admissions to alumni management), the platform currently in-use, online and social
presence of Educator, desire to grow digital adoption, potential conflicts (change
management, budget, resources, etc.)
• Understand the top customer needs, interest in an EduHans type product / specific
services (for both B2B and B2C type Educator)
• Identify decision-making hierarchy, key contacts for future discussions, demos, etc.
(for all target Educators that express further interest)
• With all the data captured, come up with a ‘top customer needs’ analysis and verify
against the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) currently being developed for EduHans

3. Benchmark top three competitors
• For the target customer segment, identify at least top 3 competitors (global,
regional or local) that are operating in the EdTech space in that country, state or
city. For the main competitor, find the key value proposition, product offering,
pricing tiers, market share/penetration (educators who are their customers),
funding/owner backing and benchmark against the specific EduHans service(s) -
identify why we could pitch for EduHans against the competitive product
Note: There has been earlier work done on competitive environment. Refer to that
research and supplement it with the new findings for the target customer segments

4. EduHans ‘Go-To-Market’ positioning
• Based on the data gathered during primary and secondary research, create a clear
market opportunity and positioning for EduHans
• Prepare sales pitch tactics by target segment focusing on customer’s needs and pain
areas (need to create a compelling customer story, the pitch should not be about
EduHans’ features)
• Determine pricing tiers for EduHans’ services for market entry

Phase II
1. EduHans B2B and B2C business forecast, Pro-forma, break-even analysis (include any
potential business opportunity from Upstream bespoke services/project work)
2. EduHans operational model
3. EduHans growth strategy, funding timing, investors pitch outline

Students background

THE RAJBARI BAWALI

The Zamindars of Bengal had a life of wealth and privilege rarely imagined today; they are the Nawabs, Thakur or Landed gentry equivalent of this region and led rich lives, which were an amalgamation of intrigue, battles, love, the arts and business, set amidst riches and the finest luxury India offered at that time. The Rajbari family with no exception, has an extraordinary family history dating back to over four hundred years, one which started with the Mughal Emperor, Akbar the Great, His Commander in chief, Maharajah Sawai Man Singh of Jaipur and a promising army officer, Shoba Ram Rai, originally from Uttar Pradesh. In return for having quelled a rebellion of peasants and pirates, Shoba Ram Rai was gifted over 300,000 acres of land in what was then far off Bengal. The remainder of the history is a story passed down, in the great oral tradition of Indian story-telling, passed down from generation to generation. It involves entrepreneurship, the East India Company and the ensuing colonial era and importantly, the decision to base themselves around 350 years ago, in the 24 Parganas, a strategic point on the Hooghly River from where they could see their wealth flourish.  Initially this land was still part of the Sunderbans, a dense stretch of mangroves, and swamp land, home to countless tigers and numerous other wildlife.  The local population were the ‘Baul’ community, forest dwellers who lived a subsistence existence, fishing and collecting honey. They worshiped two main Gods Bon Bibi, the Goddess of the Forest and Dakshin Rai, the God of the Tigers, both of whom would protect them. However, the Mondal Family as they were called by then, were worshipers of Lord Krishna and needed their own temples and so, having settled, built their first, the Sri Radha Kantajiu, which was closely followed by several others around the area. Their homes soon followed, transforming this small, rural village into an extraordinary town of temples and palaces. The Rajbari itself, an extraordinary architectural master piece, was built around 250 years ago. It saw over 170 years of grand living, parties and eminent guests but unfortunately post-independence, the Zamindars lost much of their wealth and the house started to fall into disrepair. Many others disappeared altogether as the families started to disperse to rebuild their own lives. A few members stayed on, caught up in the memories of their former glory.  At one stage, in order to raise money, it was used for film shoots and also a movie hall. But it was not enough. It is only recently that The Rajbari, the only building now remaining from this time, albeit in ruins, has been salvaged and exquisitely restored to reflect the opulence, style and grace of the Zaminders of Bengal.
